Former ANC presidents Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma are absent from the party’s ongoing national executive committee (NEC) meeting at the Nasrec conference centre in Johannesburg’s south.
The pair, who have criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa over the alleged theft of millions of rands from his Limpopo farm, are not present at the meeting, which is expected to discuss a report into the matter.

They recently declared that Ramaphosa owed the ANC a thorough explanation of the Phala Phala scandal. The ANC chair, Gwede Mantashe, has publicly urged them to attend the meeting to express their displeasure.
Instead, the two have decided to skip the meeting. The ANC integrity commission (IC) is expected to present its report into the scandal, which has heightened tensions within the already fractured party, on Saturday.
According to TimesLIVE, the IC has concluded that the scandal has brought the party into disrepute.
The ethics commission, however, was unable to determine whether Ramaphosa, farm workers, former spy boss Arthur Fraser, or ANC members should be held accountable.

The draft report, titled “Progress report on the Phala Phala matter,” claims that the body of elders was unable to persuade Ramaphosa to reveal details of what occurred at his Limpopo farm in February 2020, and that measures were put in place to conceal the theft through clandestine operations involving police and intelligence networks.
Other IC reports expected to be tabled this weekend include one on Mantashe, deputy defence minister Thabang Makwetla, and deputy state security minister Zizi Kodwa in relation to the Zondo Commission report’s findings.
The report named Mantashe and Makwetla for allegedly receiving undue security upgrades at their private homes from Bosasa, a company that was awarded billions in contracts from the correctional services department.
Kodwa was investigated for having an improper relationship with former EOH boss Jehan Mackay, from which he benefited financially by millions of rands. EOH provided tax solutions to the government.
The NEC meeting is also expected to approve the financial and organisational reports that treasurer-general Paul Mashatile and deputy president David Mabuza will present at the party’s national conference in December.
“As you know, this is a crucial NEC meeting because we are preparing for December. So a lot of the reports coming in this weekend are going to be presented to the conference,” said Mashatile.
