President Cyril Ramaphosa being whisked away by security has prompted questions and raise concerns about his safety, but State Security Deputy Minister Zizi Kodwa has assured South Africans that all is well
Ramaphosa was set to address the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) at the Lebowakgomo Civic Centre on Thursday, 6 January 2022, but the event was cancelled. This was due to a possible breach of COVID-19 regulations as people managed to gain access into the venue without being screened.
“I can’t speak on behalf of the organisers of this event who themselves decided to discontinue this event. Nothing similar will happen on Saturday. The President will address the people of South Africa on behalf of the ANC as expected on January 8. There shouldn’t be any worries,” Kodwa is quoted as having said on The Citizen.
The recent attack on the Constitutional Court as well as the fire set in Parliament prompted some to question whether all this, and the fact that Ramaphosa had to be taken away, were linked in some way.

“There was no security threat against the President. There shouldn’t be any concerns, not only January 8, but generally, there are no issues about threat and risk, but from time to time we do make assessments,”
At the same time, the ANC revealed that it was in fact ANCWL president Bathabile Dlamini who made the call for the event to be cancelled.
“The leadership of the ANC Women’s League, led by president Bathabile Dlamini, made the call for the event to be postponed and a new date will be conveyed when the president of the ANC will deliver the all-important lecture honouring the legacy of Lillian Ngoyi. The Lilian Ngoyi memorial lecture could not proceed due to the event being oversubscribed by members of our organisations and communities at large,”
