Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper and newly crowned PSL Footballer of the Season, Ronwen Williams has recalled the 2023/24 campaign in an exclusive interview with iDiski Times, and revealed he is targeting Kaizer Chiefs’ record of least goals conceded.
Masandawana and Williams had a brilliant DStv Premiership campaign, going unbeaten until their final day defeat to Cape Town City.
Overall, they’ve only conceded 11 goals this past campaign, equalling the record of the late Ted Dumitru’s Kaizer Chiefs from 2003/04.
Williams himself only conceded eight goals in 22 league appearances, keeping 15 cleansheets, which earned him the DStv Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season award but he’s targeting to even do better next campaign.
“Concede less and have more clean sheets then it means we break more records because that’s how we are at Sundowns,” he told Velile Mnyandu in an exclusive interview in his hometown of Gelvandale in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape, as he gave back to his community through the Ronwen 30 Foundation.
“Each and every season, we set targets for ourselves. The mentality that we have is that we want to be number one in everything, and we are not happy that we tied the record for the least amount of goals conceded. We want to have that record.
“So that’s a challenge for us going into the new season to concede less than 11 goals; let’s keep it to a single digit.
“That’s how we are at Sundowns, and that’s why we are who we are because of that winner’s mentality.”
Overall, Williams has made 84 appearances for Sundowns, keeping 42 clean sheets, since joining the club from rivals SuperSport United in July 2022.
