MMC for Public Safety in the Johannesburg Metro, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku says SAPS has not been cooperative with other stakeholders when it comes to policing illegal mining in the city.
This follows reports of violence over the weekend resulting in five people being killed, in what is alleged to be a turf war between rival gangs carrying out illegal mining activities in Riverlea, south of Johannesburg.
Yesterday, Police Minister Bheki Cele visited the area and assured residents that specialised units will be deployed to combat illegal mining in the area. Dr Tswaku says the city has established a multi-task team consisting of JMPD, SAPS and the Mineral Resources and Energy Department.
“The issue of the Zama Zamas, it’s the competency of SAPS and what I have been saying this every single time is that SAPS is not cooperating at all, because we go on these operations and do raids and then SAPS don’t pitch when we are having these operations of the Zama Zamas. Look we have to have this task team because it must be a combination of all stakeholders because as the JMPD we can do operations, we can do search and seizure but at the end people who have to convict these people is actually SAPS.”
Tear gas them
Dr Tshwaku has suggested tear gassing the illegal miners.
“If you chase after them, they immediately go underground and they can run from Kagiso and come in Benoni because that’s how far these tunnels can actually go. So that is why I’m saying that for us is actually a plus to say we are going to put tear gas there and bury them inside, just close it down, we must smoke them out because we can’t find them underground.”
