At the Lebombo border crossing in Mpumalanga, vigilant border guards discovered approximately 200kg of cocaine concealed in a truck heading from Mozambique to South Africa.
The cocaine had an estimated street worth of R29.3 million, according to a statement from the provincial commissioner’s office in Mpumalanga.
The illegal cargo was discovered in a truck that was stopped on December 3, 2022, between 10 and 11 a.m. at the Lebombo border crossing.
It is claimed that the driver of the truck, which had Gauteng license plates, entered South Africa from Mozambique at the Lebombo port of entry while declaring his cargo to be hair pieces.
Customs officers flagged the truck for additional scrutiny after the cargo was cleared.
While officials were still busy, the driver sneaked away under the pretence of attempting to contact the truck owner.
According to officials, the “driver disappeared into thin air,” before the drugs were discovered hidden inside the truck’s cargo.
Both the truck and the luggage were seized for further investigation, and police are looking for the driver and the truck’s owner.
Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, was delighted with the interception of the substances made by customs officials.
Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela said that since the port of entry was visited last week to assess readiness for the festive season, everything has been exemplary and all stakeholders committed to ensuring a festive season that is free from crime hence this major breakthrough.
