A man lost his money and car to thieves, then murdered a 10-month-old baby.
A surveillance company in South Africa led the police to the suspected killers after the robbery.
Two suspects have been arrested in Zimbabwe with a Toyota Fortuner allegedly stolen in KwaZuluNatal.
A South African-registered car with tracking device has helped Zimbabwean police track down an armed gang of seven members. A Toyota Fortuner registered KwaZuluNatal with a personal license plate was stolen from its owner while on vacation in Murewa, a rural district 75 km northeast of Harare. The thieves fled with the vehicle after stealing from the owner $500 (Rd 8,000) and Rs 15,000.
But he didn’t know his car would be used by armed thieves in the same neighborhood as a means of escape. A police statement, reported by News24, said seven gunmen rammed into a family in Macheke, 50 kilometers from where the car was stolen. They raided the house, but an altercation ensued, causing one of the men to shoot a 10-month-old baby and wound its mother in the lower left part of her chest. They were shot after the baby’s father, who was armed, shot the thieves twice, without success. Because the getaway car was reported stolen, a tracking company in South Africa provided police with their contact details that led them to the theft. A shooting occurred after police located the vehicle. Six of the seven suspects were arrested.
“ZRP [Police of the Republic of Zimbabwe] confirmed the arrests of Blessing Banda, 25, and Tinashe Mungadza, 38, for motor vehicle theft, which resulted in the recovery of a stolen Toyota Fortuner in South Africa. The suspects were stopped on December 28 at a checkpoint at km 333 HarareChirundu Road after pasting the Zimbabwe number plate and the license plate of a Ford Ranger,” police said.
