Bheki Cele, the Police Minister, says he is verifying reports that three EFF councillors were among the more than 80 persons arrested during the national shutdown.
Cele made the news during a press conference in Soweto on Monday morning.
The arrests coincide with the EFF-led national shutdown in protest of the continued load shedding problem, as well as a call for President Cyril Ramaphosa to resign.

Cele explained that the three councillors were arrested in Gauteng, Free State, and Mpumalanga.
“We have arrested 87 people. Now I am told that there are three EFF councillors among those people that have been arrested around the country, but I am still going to verify that,” said Cele.
Meanwhile, on Monday morning, community leader Nhlanhla ‘Lux’ Mohlauli turned to social media to say that his house had been petrol bombed.
The event occurred in Pimville, Soweto, in the early hours of Monday morning.

National Police Commissioner Fanie Masemola told the media that commercial explosives were used while resolving the matter.
“Police seized some sharp nails that were left over from the commercial explosives we don’t know what type, but mostly commercial explosives are used in the mines, and they are also used quite often in the ATM bombings.
“We just know that it was a commercial explosive that was used, we haven’t gotten information on the cartridges found. The DPCI and the forensics will investigate and will update us.”
