Student at Pietermaritzbirg sleep outside Msundizi Campus of Umgungundlovu TVET College because they don’t have money to pay for rent.
Tuesday morning is the second morning the student wake up outside the college’s gate, many do not have money to pay for their won private rent or to rent at school accommodations.
Student who sleep outside Umgungundlovu TVET College’s gate says that they have evicted by their private landlords, they say they don’t even have money to pay the outstanding rent money.
These student says that the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) hasn’t been paid out so that they can pay rent. Regional Task Team member, Lungani Dlamani said student applied in time and submitted in time but the College delayed the submissions.
It is difficult for these students who sleep outside college’s gate to just go back home just like that. They went to Pietermaritzbirg for education and they are from New Castle, Empangeni and Eastern Cape.
Stdents says that they will shutdown the college untill the college resolve their payments. Students talk about this is the same issue every year and it’s tiring because they have traveled far.
NSFAS’s marketing and communications spokesperson, Papama Mpupa told news publications GroundUp that the query was being processed on Tuesday. A response will ne included once received.
This comes after attempts to get comments from principal Ntombi Ntshangase were unsuccessful.
