The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) unveiled the country’s upgraded coins and banknotes together with the Nelson Mandela Foundation on Wednesday, 3 May.
The new banknotes and coins come with enhanced security features and new designs, even if they don’t stray too far from what is currently in circulation.
“We have added the SA flag, preamble to our Constitution in micro-lettering and the Big 5 depicted as a family. The deep ecology theme of the 4th decimal coin series celebrates our interconnectedness with other living organisms,” said the Reserve Bank.
The new money is recognised as legal tender and is expected to enter circulation this week.
Important to note, existing coins and banknotes will continue to be recognised.
The new banknotes keep the “Big Five” animals and Nelson Mandela’s face.
However, the SARB opted to emphasise family, and the notes now depict adult animals and their offspring.
There are also changes to the colour of the notes.
