Unsafe, filthy, and dirty, these are the words that kept coming up when Health Ombud Professor Malegapuru Makgoba interviewed 34 people on the state of Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital. Makgoba was delivering findings from a year-long investigation into the health facility following several complaints. Chief among them was the absence of the CEO and patients not being respected.
“In 2016, an investigation was undertaken at Rahima Moosa Hospital, they came to the conclusion in three weeks that the hospital was unsafe. During our investigation just around 34 people across the hospital. There were words that become common that we heard as we were interviewing these people. Three words came up: dirty, filthy, and unsafe,” Makgoba said.
Makgoba said it was found that patients and pregnant women slept on the floor. There was a video that was given to us, but also, almost all the people that we interviewed confirmed that that was the case, so we couldn’t obviously ignore that,” Makgoba said.
“Then there was confirmation that obviously the CEO did not spend as much time as she was supposed to at the hospital. All that is in the report, and clearly the allegation that the dignity of the patient was not being respected, becomes really obvious.
