The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) have launched a manhunt for seven inmates who escaped from Grahamstown Correctional Facility in Makhanda, Eastern Cape.
The seven detainees are believed to have escaped in the early hours of Tuesday, October 18th.

Six of the inmates are Zimbabweans accused of rhino poaching, and one is a South African accused of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, and robbery.
According to the Department of Correctional Services, investigations have been launched, and the circumstances surrounding the escape will be confirmed in due course.
Their names are:
- Nhamo Muyambo
- Francis Chitho
- Trymore Chauke
- Lubuyo September
- Abraham Moyane
- Simba Masinge
- Bennet Kwarrile
The inmates’ images have yet to be released. Citizens have been warned not to confront the men if they are spotted. Instead, complete cooperation with the police is encouraged. We also anticipate that the authorities will release images of all seven escapees on Tuesday.
“Working with the SAPS, the Department of Correctional Services has launched a manhunt, following the escape of seven detainees at Grahamstown Prison in Makhanda, Eastern Cape. This happened in the early hours of Tuesday 18 October.”
“Investigations have been instituted, and the circumstances relating to the escape will be confirmed in due course. The seven wanted suspects have been charged with rhino poaching. We appeal to the public to assist with any information that can lead to their re-arrest.”
“The escaped prisoners are considered to be dangerous. Citizens should not confront them if spotted, and any details worth noting must be shared with your nearest police station. We will share images of the suspects later in the day,” said the Department of Correctional Services.
