Former Bafana Bafana captain and Orlando Pirates captain Senzo Meyiwa was killed as part of a contract hit, not a heist gone bad. Colonel Bongani Gininda, who is conducting the inquiry into Meyiwa’s death, stated this in his affidavit.
The arrest warrants for Muzikawukhulelwa S’Tembu Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Ziphozonke Maphisa, and Sifisokuhle Sifiso Nkani Ntuli were obtained using the affidavit, which was deposed and signed in October last year. The five men have been charged with Meyiwa’s murder by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
“Investigations, which resulted in evidence under oath, indicated that the victim was assassinated as a contractual assassination or hit rather than a robbery or robbery gone bad,” Gininda, who heads the police section responsible with probing cold cases, stated in the affidavit. Five defendants actively engaged in the planning and execution of Senzo Meyiwa’s contracted murder, according to evidence presented under oath.”
The document does not specify who hired the five men to murder Meyiwa. In 2014, the footballer was fatally murdered at his fiancée, actress and artist Kelly Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus. According to the affidavit, the NPA will build a solid case against the defendants.
It was revealed that Ntanzi made two admissions in June of last year, one to the police and the other to a magistrate. “On the 19th of June 2020, this suspect confessed to a commissioned officer, and on the 24th of June 2020, he confessed to a magistrate at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court in the presence of his counsel.”
Ntanzi sought to turn state witness in exchange for a lower sentence, according to a police official close to the investigation who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “However, the NPA turned down his offer since he was offering a five-year commitment.” According to the affidavit, Ntanzi tied Mncube to the murder in his confession.
“This accused’s role was also revealed in great detail in suspect two’s confession. The suspect was discovered to be a condemned prisoner, serving 35 years in jail for a murder committed in 2014. The identical handgun used in the murder for which the accused was serving his sentence was [sic] used in the murder of Senzo Meyiwa, according to ballistic testing.”
In addition, images obtained on Mncube’s phone showed him wearing the exact clothing described by witnesses on the day Meyiwa was slain, according to Gininda’s affidavit. Aside from sworn testimonies from witnesses, Ntuli is linked to the incident because of the automobile that was used to carry the accused from the Vosloorus Hostel to the crime scene and back.
“A silver VW Polo is connected to him as a getaway car.” He also drove the car with the suspects to the crime scene and back to the Vosloorus hostel after the event, according to the evidence. “During the conduct of this crime, his responsibility was to remain and watch the getaway automobile. Independent witnesses have confirmed that ‘Mafika’ was observed driving the car in the presence of the referenced suspects before and after the murder.”
According to the affidavit, Meyiwa’s murder was plotted in the Vosloorus Hostel, and “the aforementioned accused are also known to be hit men for taxi wars.” “Evidence in the form of sworn, confirming, and independent witness testimony demonstrates a causal relationship between the offenders and the crimes of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of unlicensed guns, and unlawful ammunition possession.”
The officer, who requested anonymity, stated that the NPA had a good case. “This should be a no-brainer. A pretrial meeting has already been place, and none of the case’s facts are in question. The fact that none of the defendants has requested for bail demonstrates that the prosecution has a solid case.”
