Stellenbosch’s in-form goalkeeper Sage Stephens says that while they may tell themselves the Carling Knockout final against TS Galaxy is ‘just another game’ to ease the pressure, they know it’s a lot more than that.
Stellenbosch meets Galaxy at 15h00 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, their first-ever appearance in a domestic cup final.
Stephens, who won the 2018 MTN8 with Cape Town City, albeit as a non-playing substitute, is set to start in his first cup final too, and says this is a game for players to put themselves on the map and make history for the club.
“I think to take the pressure away, I think that’s what we tell ourselves – it’s just another game,” Stephens said in the build-up to the final.
“But with the history of the club, and what we’ve achieved thus far, this is not just another game!
“If you look at our squad and where each player comes from, there’s a special story that each player has.
“And I just think like this game in itself can change a lot of lives in our team, to put a lot of players on the map.
“So to answer your question, I don’t think this is just another game for us.
“This is a game where we are writing history this weekend.”
Stephens has been in excellent form in the last two months, and said he’s enjoying the run, but added that he didn’t start the campaign too well, so he worked with analyst Brendon Fourie and the technical team on where to improve.
“As a player, it’s always special, like you say, when you’re in form like this,” Stephens said.
“Luckily enough, with the technical team we have, it wasn’t like that at the beginning of the season, so we sat down, looked at things that needed to improve so I was aware on certain things.

“So luckily with Brennas and the backroom staff, he was able to help me with what I needed to do.
“And it’s starting to show but on the field so. Always going to be happy with the run that I’m on, just to continue working and keep pushing. And may it long continue.”
