Finally TS Galaxy ended their 12 matches of winless streak as they beat Maritzburg United 2-1 at Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday and coach Sead Ramovic says the pressure was starting to mount on him to change the club’s fortunes.
Galaxy have been struggling to win of late with the last time they collected the three points was against SuperSport United in August. They also beat Mamelodi Sundowns before that game to go top of the DStv Premiership standings.
In beating those two Tshwane giant sides, Galaxy also went five games without conceding a goal, before that was broken by losing to Cape Town City in the sixth round.
After that, things went south for Tim Sukazi’s club. They lost five of the 12 games, drawing seven.
As they beat Maritzburg, they moved to ninth in the standings with 16 points after 13 matches played, relieving some pressure from Ramovic.
“It was important to collect points because we were under pressure and we were 12th in the position (coming to this game),” said Ramovic after the game.
“So we knew that if we lost we were in big trouble. But we are still in there though, but our goal is to be in the top eight at the end of the season and we will fight for that.”
Up next for Galaxy is Royal AM on Tuesday at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban, who are hurting after they lost 2-1 to Cape Town City also on Friday in Cape Town.
Interestingly, it was Royal AM who triggered things for Ramovic to be appointed at Galaxy, with KwaZulu-Natal club crushing the Rockets 4-2 in the first round last season in September last year.
That ended Owen da Gama’s stint with the club. Royal AM also crushed Galaxy 4-1 in the second leg last season.
“It was not an easy game against Maritzburg because we were playing against a tactically smart coach in Fadlu Davids (who this game was his first in charge), we were just waiting for our chances and especially after they scored first (through Wayde Jooste). We knew that we would come back and we stayed calm, we kept our confidence up and in the end we deserved to win the game,” added Ramovic.
