On Saturday, while participating in the ANC’s Letsema campaign in Cape Town, President Cyril Ramaphosa responded to questions about the Phala Phala farm scandal.
Ramaphosa said that there was “no issue” or “crisis” surrounding Phala Phala.
He clarified that the issue would be addressed at the ANC’s elective conference this week, with Ramaphosa hoping for a second term at the helm.
“So you guys are really getting excited over this one issue,” he said on the sidelines of his visit in Philippi.
In his reassuring voice, he said: “Please relax. Really, relax; there’s no issue, there’s no crisis. Just relax and do come and listen to the political report. I invite you to do that.”
The ANC’s integrity commission is investigating Ramaphosa’s actions in the farm theft scandal.
He faces impeachment for keeping $500,000 (about R8.7m) in his couch, which was later stolen.
Ramaphosa may have violated the constitution, according to an independent panel chaired by former Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo. Ramaphosa has now requested that the report be reviewed by the Constitutional Court.
