Belgian club KVC Westerlo have secured the signing of highly-rated midfielder Rhys Youlley who is eligible to represent South Africa.
The 18-year-old midfielder joins the club’s U21 side from Macarthur where his impressive performances earned him a spot in the Australia U19 set-up before Westerlo came calling.
“The Belgian league is full of great young players – it’s been a stepping stone for so many great players. I can’t wait to get over there and get started,” he told FTBL after signing a three-year deal.
With both his parents born and raised in South Africa, his mother from Pietermaritzburg and father from Johannesburg, Youlley, potentially, could represent South Africa.
However, it remains to be seen whether he is pursued for the switch or if there’s interest in moving away from what seems like the inevitable route towards the Socceroos.
His older brother Liam, who currently plays from Marc Stallions in Australia had a short stint in the DStv Premiership with Maritzburg United after his two seasons with Western Sydney Wanders first team in the A-League.
He’s also related to the Baccus family, with Kearyn previously in the South African top-flight with Kaizer Chiefs between 2019 and 2022, while St Mirren talent Keanu represents the senior Australia national team.
