Herman Mashaba was born in 1959, but his academic aspirations were shattered in 1980 when the University of the North was forced to close due to political unrest. Once classes resumed at the university two months later, his decision was final.
Mashaba worked as a clerk at Spar Pretoria for seven months in the late 1980s. Motani Industries was his final and longest-lasting salaried job, lasting 23 months. In his time at Motani, he was able to buy a car and resigned two months later to begin his own business.
When Herman Mashaba was growing up, he was always a business-minded individual. He was everywhere there was a chance to make money. He cared deeply about every penny.
One of South Africa’s wealthiest entrepreneurs, he was born into a poor family and has worked his way up the ladder. His remarkable journey began in Hammanskraal, a small village in Gauteng, South Africa. Rather than settling for a wasted future, he worked tirelessly to create South Africa’s first black owned and operated hair care company.
After hearing stories about white people’s experiences as domestic servants and gardeners from his friends and family, the young man developed a deep distrust of white people. Mashaba chose to gamble and “sell dope” to make money instead of submitting to the same fate. As a young man, he engaged in a lot of sex and drinking, just like many of his peers. But he refused to work as a gardener for white people, whom he had grown to despise.
In spite of the odds, Black Like Me was able to build a successful business selling fair products to the black community.
When we devote ourselves to hard work, we learn a variety of valuable life lessons, including perseverance, attention to detail, responsibility, problem-solving, and self-control. In turn, these lessons help us in other aspects of our lives (health, relationships, hobbies, etc.).
A sense of personal efficacy is created when you focus on what you can do to improve yourself and your situation. This creates positive emotions and improves performance. People with high emotional intelligence don’t waste time dwelling on problems; they know that their best work comes when they concentrate on finding solutions.
Because some people are able to identify their core strengths, they are able to consistently perform at a high level. It’s not a waste of time for them to focus on their strengths and weaknesses. Most self-improvement focuses on building up skills or talents that you don’t have. Identify your best traits and abilities.
