Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Bradley Carnell was fired from his role as head coach at Major League Soccer side St. Louis City SC.
Carnell, 47, guided St. Louis in their first year as MLS franchise with incredible success, breaking several records and winning the Western Conference and qualified for the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup.
They were the MLS expansion club with most wins in their debut season, and Carnell was even nominated for the Coach of the Season award, but things started to stutter in their second campaign, winning just two of their last 18 games.
On Monday, St. Louis announced the decision to part ways with Carnell.
“St. Louis CITY SC today announced the departure of the club’s head coach, Bradley Carnell. Technical Director John Hackworth will manage the team on an interim basis as CITY SC begins the search for a new head coach,” the club stated.
CITY SC Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel said it was a tough decision to part with Carnell, whom he had handpicked as first coach.
“Given Bradley’s many contributions to the club, this was not an easy decision,” he told the club’s media team.
“Unfortunately, based on our Year 2 results to date, we believe a coaching change is in the best interest of the club as we regroup and look to improve both our performance and our results.”
Overall, Carnell was in charge of 62 games, winning 22, drawing 15 and losing 25.
