The National Consumer Commission has advised those who own GIZZU 300Wh and 500Wh portable power banks to stop using them immediately due to fire hazards.
This comes after reports of devices catching fire while charging.
According to the importer and supplier, Syntech Distribution (Pty) Ltd, the affected gadgets have a battery manufacturing defect that might cause the product to self-combust and melt while charging.

As the product’s battery self-combusts, a non-toxic cloud of smoke is emitted, which may cause neighbouring furniture to catch fire.
Takealot.com, Builders Warehouse, Makro, Amazing Connection, and Hifi Corp sold the products that were imported from China.
According to Thezi Mabuza, Acting National Consumer Commissioner, the products should be returned to the supplier or retailer.
“While the supplier says the recall affects a small number of units; however, safety of South African consumers is of utmost importance, all the time.

“This recall comes at the time where South Africans are grappling with the effects of rolling blackouts and trying to circumvent the effects of loadshedding. It is estimated that 3500 units were sold ” she added.
