Chippa United chairman Chippa Mpengesi said he could not let the opportunity to appoint Vusumuzi Vilakazi to work with Morgan Mammila pass.
Vilakazi resigned at Golden Arrows earlier this month, where he was allegedly unhappy about the package he was earning, despite having led Abafana Bes’Thende to second position together with Mabhuti Khenyeza.
Many first thought Kanu, as Vilakazi is known, would be a link-man between the senior team and the development after being appointed as Technical Director at Chippa, but Mammila confirmed he was brought in to assist him at the first team.
As a consequence, he was on the bench when Chippa came from behind to beat Richards Bay 2-1 at King Zwelithini Stadium on Tuesday night in Durban.
Vilakazi was the one mostly calling the shots from the bench and coach Mammila said at the post match press conference he doesn’t have any issues with it.
“You know Morgan is our project,” said Mpengesi, who was so happy after the game.
“We gave him an idea of how to be a coach, so it was for us to support him. Because the last time we made a mistake of appointing him as coach [but] not giving him the necessary support.
“Kanu, I mean, his name says all itself. So when surprisingly he was available, we could not really waste that time because he is a person that we have been admiring but the mandate was clear to build the team.
“Build the development and assist the senior team, because the Chippa United brand and approach is not only about the senior team, so he is doing very well.
“You saw our MDC [DStv Diski Challenge] team win last week [against Polokwane City] and here we are today. Deservedly we won today and we didn’t win by fluke.
“These two guys, our hope is that they can work together because in football any coach is good due to his technical team that is strong.”
Elmo Kambindu scored twice, cancelling out Sanele Barns’ opener from the first half.

The Namibian international, who has been hampered by injuries, then scored a late header to ensure Chippa win for the second time this season, moving to fifth in the table with nine points after seven games.
Mpengesi said the appointment of Vilakazi was a masterstroke because they had the MTN8 break, followed by the FIFA break, giving him sufficient time to implement some things within the team.
“That helps us a lot and you remember the same coach was coaching at Arrows and he came here to win against Richards Bay some few weeks ago,” said Mpengesi.
“We are hoping that spirit can be the same because before he left Golden Arrows, they hammered SuperSport United.
“But Morgan is also a good mentor, he is a good motivator, unifier – their combination we believe could go a long way.”
