Chippa United coach Morgan Mammila says “we have to dream big” and has targeted 54 points for the club this season, saying it is something that they can do.
The Chilli Boyz picked up their second win of the season as they came from behind to beat Richards Bay 2-1 at King Zwelithini Stadium on Tuesday.
Elmo Kambindu scored twice for Chippa on his first appearance this season, with Luvuyo Memela setting him up before finishing low to cancel out Sanele Barns’ powerful shot in the first half.
Memela, who spent one season with Bay last term, again found the Namibian international, curling a superb cross and Kambindu was unmarked to beat Samil Magoola at the far post.
Following this win, Chippa jumped to fifth in the DStv Premiership table with nine points after seven matches.
“I personally tasted the top eight four or five months ago (with Moroka Swallows as the technical advisor),” said Mammila.
“So I know how it tastes, so the plan is to remain in the top eight brackets from match number 10 up until match number 30. Our target is we can get 54 points, we would be fine.”
The last time Chippa finished in the top eight was in the 2015/16 season under Dan Malesela.
And 54 points, normally in this league, win you the league title, until Mamelodi Sundowns has made it impossible for others.
Orlando Pirates, who finished second last season, earned 54 points, 16 behind Sundowns.
In the previous season, Cape Town City also finished second, but they accumulated 49 points.
Mammila said this is possible to be achieved in any of the CAF spots.

“That is the target (to finish second or third),” said Mammila.
“We dream big, man. Leave this thing of fighting for top eight, no, there is top four, there is CAF Confederations Cup (spot), there is Champions League. If we want to grow as a team, the brand of the team will go miles away if we play those kinds of competitions.
“We didn’t know those Yangas and Simbas, we only now see them in the Confed Cup and Champions League. Let’s be honest, Chippa has been in football for so many years consecutively.
“I always tell people that Chippa is number five when it comes to the number of years spent consecutively in the PSL.
“Richards Bay just came in, Cape Town City is yesterday’s team, Golden Arrows were relegated and came back, Polokwane City was relegated and came back and a number of years Chippa is number five, just behind SuperSport United because there is Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Sundowns and Chippa. It is where we belong and this team belongs there (at the top).”
