Forecasts of heavy rain in the KwaZulu-Natal municipalities of Ugu and Harry Gwala have put disaster management officials on high alert.
According to the department of cooperative governance and traditional affairs, the South African Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning on Wednesday.

Parts of the Ugu and Harry Gwala districts will bear the brunt of the thunderstorms, according to the warning, with a level 5 warning issued for greater Kokstad, Ray Nkonyeni, Ubuhlebezwe, Umuziwabantu, Umzimkhulu, and Umzumbe.
The northern, western, and southern parts of the province are on level 2 alert, including Ladysmith, Underberg, Impendle, Estcourt, Mooi River, Newcastle, Msinga, Richmond, Msunduzi, Hluhluwe, Jozini, and Pongola.
