Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. has sent a rallying message to the club’s fans over the current seven-year trophy drought.
Motaung Jr. started his current in July 2021 but the club is yet to lift silverware since his arrival – in fact the club’s trophy drought dates back to the league title in 2014/15.
Ahead of the 2022/23 season, the club opted to rope in Arthur Zwane – the first senior coach to have come through the club’s coaching ranks – and revamp the squad once more to build a winning team.
However, many fans expected the success would come quicker and that Chiefs could actually challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the league title. But Kaizer Jr. asked for patience from the club’s faithful when quizzed whether expectations for this newly-formed team might be too high.
“One thing we must know that our supporters are very, very educated when it comes to the game of football,” he told Newzroom Afrika.
“Unfortunately at Kaizer Chiefs, we have to win. We have to win comfortably, we have to win with a certain way of playing.
“Now, I think because of the drought period that has happened over the last seven years, some of us are getting a bit disillusioned and there is many ways of voicing that frustration.
“I do think that our supporters are definitely right, a club like Kaizer Chiefs can’t be sitting and have no trophies in seven years.
“It’s our job, it’s our job to balance how we achieve our short-term goals, how do we change and achieve our playing philosophy. Having it set and having them also being proud of the football that is being played because that’s their identity and they want that, they demand that.
“At the same time, getting the result and I think we can. I believe in the squad, I believe in the technical team, the chairman and and all the stakeholders involved that we can turn this around and put a smile on their faces.”
How do you rate Kaizer Jr’s work since he’s taken over as Sporting Director?
