Kaizer Chiefs will say goodbye to midfielder Siyethemba Sithebe by the end of the 2023/24 season. Sithebe joined Naturena from AmaZulu in July 2022, and his current contract with the club ends in June. He played a significant role in the 2022/23 season, appearing in 28 matches across all competitions. However, this season, he has been on the sidelines due to long-term injuries, making only one appearance so far.
A source from Phakaaathi revealed that Sithebe won’t continue with Chiefs next season. “Considering his age, Sithebe should be playing regularly at Chiefs, but his injury has hindered his performance this season. Moreover, the club cannot negotiate a new contract with him,” the source stated. “Chiefs has also signed quality players in his position, and young talents like Samkelo (Zwane) and Lehlogonolo (Matlou) are competing with him in midfield. Sithebe’s future with Chiefs doesn’t look promising.”
Sources from The Citizen suggest that the 31-year-old Sithebe might return to AmaZulu, his former club from 2017 to 2022, although there could be complications due to his previous departure on bad terms.
Chiefs, currently in seventh place, will face Cape Town City on Saturday, both teams eager for points to maintain their positions in the league. City, having won just one of their last eight league games, are reminded by their coach, Eric Tinkler, of the unpredictable nature of football. Chiefs themselves are struggling, having won only one of their last six matches, with their recent loss to Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby. In their head-to-head encounters, City has dominated, winning five of their last six league matches against Chiefs, including the last four.
