Jonty Rhodes took fielding to a new level in the modern era, and it is only fitting that fans have voted his incredible 1992 diving run-out of Inzamam-ul-Haq in Brisbane as the ‘Greatest Moment’ in ICC Cricket World Cup history.
Rhodes’ highlight reel is legendary, but his most memorable moment came for South Africa versus Pakistan in the 1992 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in Australia at Woolloongabba, Brisbane, when he ran out Inzamam with a flying dive to ‘demolish the stumps’.

Jonty Rhodes’ ‘greatest moment’ “just felt right at the time”
Writing on Twitter (X), Rhodes said: “Players work so hard at refining their skill-sets so that they become [a] habit and part of your subconscious movements.” The Maritzburg College old boy wrote about his “love” of fielding at school, noting that he had never attempted a diving run-out before the 1992 World Cup but that it “just seemed right at the time”.
He added: “I loved my fielding, even at school, and had never done this dive into the stumps before 1992, and never did it again. [It] just seemed right at the time, [I] never thought about it until it happened.”

Rhodes pioneered fielding in the 90s, and he became famous for his diving one-hand stops, stunning acrobatic catches, and his ability to run out unsuspecting batsmen due to his speed and agility. Rhodes was up against 32 other ‘memorable moments’ from past World Cup tournaments. However, the 54-year-old South African legend beat out MS Dhoni’s World Cup final-winning six that won India the 2011 edition of the men’s competition to take the No 1 spot.
