Another member of the Democratic Alliance (DA) has come under scrutiny for past actions. Just one day after DA’s Renaldo Gouws was suspended for a racist rant, fellow MP Ian Cameron faces backlash over old videos showing him in blackface.
The videos, stemming from a 2012 AfriForum Youth protest, have surfaced on social media, drawing significant criticism.

The controversial footage originated from a protest organized by AfriForum Youth outside the office of Blade Nzimande, the Minister of Higher Education and Training.
The protest was in response to accusations that the University of Pretoria’s admissions policy was racially discriminatory, allegedly favouring black students over white students in the veterinary science program.
During the protest, participants, including Ian Cameron, painted their faces black, which has now resurfaced and sparked outrage.

At the time of the protest, Ian Cameron, who was then a young activist, expressed his frustration to EWN, stating that 73 white students were rejected solely based on their race. He argued that the Department of Higher Education was mandating more black student admissions, which he deemed unfair.
“Blackface isn’t just about painting one’s skin darker or putting on a costume. It invokes a racist and painful history”

This sentiment has been revisited as Cameron, now a DA MP, faces criticism for his actions during the protest.
In light of the emerging video, the DA’s Director of Communications, Richard Newton, released a statement. He acknowledged the video and Cameron’s participation in the 2012 protest as an activist for AfriForum.
Newton emphasized that Cameron has since clarified his stance, explaining that his involvement was a protest against what he perceived as unfair admissions policies.
