FOUR matric pupils were lucky to escape with their lives when a car crashed into them – in the schoolyard!
The pupils from Ramashobohle High School in Makeketela Village, Ga-Mamabolo in Limpopo had just finished writing exams on Tuesday, 30 November when a black Renault driven by a Grade 10 pupil lost control and crashed into them.
The car belonged to a teacher’s assistant at the school. The car was allegedly being pushed backwards to start it and a Grade 10 pupil was in the driver’s seat. The car started but the pupil, who could not drive properly, accelerated and crashed into a group of pupils before crashing into a mobile classroom.
Tidimalo Chuene of the Limpopo Department of Education said the pupils were taken to the Mankweng Hospital.
“One pupil with suspected head and leg injuries was transferred to Limpopo Provincial Hospital while the other three were discharged after being checked.”
Chuene further told Daily Sun the owner of the car and the pupil who was driving were taken away by the Mankweng police.
She said the psycho-social team have been dispatched to visit the victims and the school to offer necessary support.
A witness said the car is always started with a push and they were shocked to see it being driven by a pupil.
“It happened so quickly. We heard a loud bang and there was a lot of loud screams and dust. I thought they were dead.”
Limpopo police spokesman, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed Mankweng police were investigating a reckless and negligent driving case.
“The driver was issued with a fine for allowing a person without a driver’s license to drive his vehicle. The owner of the car and the pupil who was driving were issued with the summons to appear in court,” said Mojapelo.
