One half of the Tammy Taylor owners Peet Viljoen revealed in an exclusive interview with The South African on Thursday 24 November that Carte Blanche has been served with a court order and are suing them.
In the court papers that Peet made available to us, Melany Viljoen who is the plaintiff is suing Carte Blanche Journalist Catherine Berry who is the defendant.
Berry is accused of implying that Melany paid two South African Police Service officers to deliver court
documents to the Berry in an attempt to intimidate the Defendant and in doing so was committing the unlawful act of corruption.
CARTE BLANCHE VS THE VILJOENS
The court papers also question whether Berry made a recording of the statements made by the police officers and if she did, only a part of the recording was used by her employers Carte Blanche in an episode aired on Mnet on 30 October 2022.
“The only reasonable inference that can be drawn is that the recording including the defamatory statements made, was in addition published to the employees at Carte Blanche, the names and details of said employees the publication would have had to be made to, is unknown to the Plaintiff,” read the order.
“The statement by the Defendant is wrongful and defamatory of the Plaintiff. The statements were made with the intention to defame the Plaintiff and to injure her reputation,” said the documents.
The order further states, “the statements were understood by the addressees and was intended by the Defendant to mean that the Plaintiff is dishonest, colluding unlawfully with the South African Police Force and committing unlawful
acts of corruption.
VILJOENS SUING FOR 20 MILLION
According to the court order, Melany is suing Catherine for defamation of character for the knock her reputation has allegedly suffered. She wants R 20 000 000.00.
Peet said that the money that may be awarded to them will be donated to childrens’ homes.
