Eskom said to increase electricity in South Africa in April 2021. This is to recover R13 billions of costs in energy from consumers.
Eskom is one of the companies that have been hit hard by the impact of Covid-19 and it’s lockdown. It will be on Thursday when electricity will raise across the country, 1 April 2021.
The electricity producer company is hoping to recover R6.6 billion in the upcoming financial year by raising the costs. The decision came after South Africa was in an on-plug of load shedding, about 5 provinces earlier this week subjected to load shedding.

“The National Energy Regulator of South Africa has made three decisions that are envisaged to increase the average price of electricity from 1 April 2021,” said Eskom general manager for regulation Hasha Tlhotlhalemaje.
The regulator announced that it will allow Eskom to recover an extra R6 billion following the review of previous decisions on electricity tariffs.
It is best to enforce the ‘user pay’ principle, where the consumer of electricity is asked to pay. The efficient costs do not go away. Eskom is required to depend on more and more debt, as well as further equity support from the government to continue to provide energy services. Thus, the consumer is continued to be provided a subsidy funded by the taxpayer.
Eskom prefers that the user pays for the electricity rather than being subsidised by the taxpayer. The Municipality of Stellenbosch, meanwhile, is looking to become the first town in South Africa to go completely independent from Eskom.
