KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala handed over six brand new cars to queen mother Mavis Zungu-Zulu and the five wives of late king Goodwill Zwelithini. Zikalala also announced the R18 million project to renovate the royal household and seven palaces to keep their agreement with the late king.
He handed over the SUVs at Ulundi Old Legislature on Friday, 17 December, accompanied by MEC of Arts and Culture Hlengiwe Mavimbela and MEC of Public Works and Human Settlements Jomo Sibiya.
Zikalala said they were pleased to hand over the five Toyota Prados and a Toyota Fortuner.
“They will be able to fulfill the duties of looking after the nation without any difficulty. ONdlunkulu beSilo (king’s wives) are the mothers and pride of the nation. They are also the custodians of the Zulu heritage, history, and traditions,” he said.
He added that the purpose of the visit was the culmination of the commitments that started while the king was still alive.
“We believe that a respectable, dignified royal household bodes well for the respect of the Zulu nation. We will continue to support the family and all efforts aimed at improving their position and standing by investing in efforts and initiatives that seek to enhance their status and authority.”
Zikalala said 12 March was still etched in their collective memory as the day in which morning turned into a period of mourning as they lost the custodian and repository of their history, heritage, and tradition.
“While the Zulu nation was still licking its wounds, we were dealt another devastating blow following the news of the death of Queen Mantfombi DlaminiZulu.”
He said looking after the nation was a difficult task that needed patience and dedication because it entailed travelling long distance and supporting communities in need.
Zikalala added that contractors to start renovations in the palaces were also introduced to the queen mother and queens.
