Deputy President Paul Mashatile expressed that only a few political parties who attended the National Dialogue on Coalition Governments Declaration in August have actually signed up for it. The conference, which was hosted by his office, aimed to establish a framework for a coalition government before next year’s elections.
During a session in the National Assembly, Mashatile stated that initially, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) was the only party interested in signing the coalition government’s declaration. However, he mentioned that not all parties had responded to the initiative.
When questioned about the slow uptake by parties, especially with the upcoming elections, Mashatile explained that having a framework in place would be beneficial for all parties involved. He emphasized the need for a framework, citing the challenges experienced in the City of Johannesburg with coalitions causing disruption to service delivery.
Mashatile also assured that his office would remind parties to come on board and discuss the possibility of legislation if needed.
Looking ahead to next year’s elections, Mashatile stressed the importance of having a framework in place in order to avoid the unpreparedness and challenges experienced with coalitions in 2016.
