A week after suggesting their rejected request to have five fixtures called off by the Premier Soccer League could be appealed at SAFA, it’s been confirmed that the motherbody has not yet heard from Kaizer Chiefs.
The Glamour Boys were hit hard by Covid-19 earlier this month with a total 31 positive cases, which later escalated by five more and then skyrocketed to 52, forcing the club to ask the league to cancel all of their remaining DStv Premiership games for the year.
Before the PSL could publicly make any comments, Amakhosi failed to honour two games – their home clash against Cape Town City at FNB Stadium and then an away match at Golden Arrows a few days later.
It took the league three weeks to finally issue a statement on the saga, confirming the request had been denied and opening up Chiefs to a forfeiture of the crucial six points.
Chiefs immediately hit back and vowed to take the case on appeal to either SAFA or the PSL’s own Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC).
However, some eight days since that statement, SAFA CEO Tebogo Motlanthe has told the Siya crew that the Soweto giants are yet to bring the matter to their attention.
The squad eventually came out of isolation, played the other three games and are currently in fourth place – 16 points behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
But that’s not to say Chiefs are letting this drama go because the DRC remains a possible option, although with the PSL currently on a lengthy recess enforced by the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations things might be on a go-slow.
And the league has made it clear it will make no further comments until January 5 at a press conference to be held to take questions on the Executive Committee’s decision to reject Chiefs’ appeal at the time.
In a circular sent to all 32 member clubs more than a year ago, the PSL put it in writing that Covid would not be a valid excuse to postpone games!
That press briefing will shed more light into what Amakhosi plan next.
