Kaizer Chiefs lost their first official friendly 1-0 to Young Africans SC at the Mkapa Stadium on Saturday.
It was the first game under new head coach Molefi Ntseki, who introduced six new players in his starting XI, with only Ranga Chivaviro sidelined with injury.
However, Chiefs didn’t have much to celebrate and conceded the only goal of the game in injury-time in the first half.
Yanga – coached by former Mamelodi Sundowns and Platinum Stars coach Miguel Ángel Gamondi, who replaced double-treble winner Nasreddine Nabi – opened up the Amakhosi defence before Kennedy Musonda calmly chipped the ball over rushing goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, who vehemently protested for offside after the ball hit the back of the net.
Chiefs, though, showed signs of a team that hasn’t played much together yet, and didn’t have a single shot on target in the first half.
It took them until the 60th minute to have their first corner of the match, with the second half disrupted by substitutions.
Yanga could’ve made it 2-0 after 70 minutes but a shot of their captain sailed just passed the post, while Brandon Petersen, who had replaced Khune at half-time, came up with a superb save in the 76th minute.
The game was part of Yanga’s Ya Mwananchi Day and the home side also introduced their new kits, playing in the new home kit in the first half and in the away strip in the second.
Chiefs will now continue their “African tour” and face Township Rollers in Botswana next weekend before facing Chippa United in their DStv Premiership opener on 6 August.
