Kaizer Chiefs legend Shane McGregor has referenced Mamelodi Sundowns as a primary example of how his former club should be run.
Masandawana has been a dominant force in South African football for over a decade. This season catapulted them to claim their seventh consecutive league championship with a record points tally of 73.
McGregor spoke to iDiski Times‘ senior writer Velile Mnyandu in edition 158 of the newspaper, saying that Amakhosi should take note of Masandawana’s standardized way of operation which has been a recipe for their success.
“I always say this: ‘have a look at Sundowns; look at how Sundowns is run’,” he said.
“It’s run as an entity; it’s run as a professional outfit where you’ve got a president, and the guys answer to the president. You’ve got a whole committee, you’ve got all your coaching staff, you’ve got scouts, you’ve got all of that answering to a higher person.
“Chiefs, they don’t do that. They[Sundowns] scout the players, they don’t just sign players for the sake of signing. They look at players if they are going to fit in the system and then they sign the player. They don’t just go ‘okay, we need a striker’. Let’s just get this guy who’s never scored a goal in 10 games.
“They first look at a player and make sure he’s the right player for the club before they sign him. Chiefs don’t do that, and as soon as guys learn that that’s the way to go, the better. I mean, Sundowns are so ahead of all the clubs in this country, and it’s not just about money. Yes, they’ve got lots of money, but they spend money [wisely], and you know what? You can have all the money in the world, but if you don’t spend it correctly, you are not going to have a team.
“Chiefs have spent so much money in the last year or two and what have they got? Nothing.”
