Bafana Bafana recorded a second successive draw after being held to a disappointing goalless stalemate by neighbours Botswana in their 2024 COSAFA Cup clash played at the Isaac Wolfson Stadium in Gqeberha on Saturday afternoon.
Thabang Matuludi created the first chance for the home side in the eighth minute, rising highest from a set-piece but his headed effort sailed wide.
Olebogeng Ramotse’s free-kick outside the South African box in the 10th minute sailed just inches over the crossbar with Mondli Mpoto flat-footed in goals.
In the 22nd minute, Malebogo Modise attempted a long-range goal from a set-piece 30 yards to bring out a great save from Victor James.
An uninspiring first period saw both sides create very few chances, going into the break still locked at 0-0.
The second half saw the Zebras make all the right moves and came close to opening the scoring through Tlamelo Kolagano in the 62nd minute. Mpoto was however quick off his line to thwart the attack and keep the scores unchanged.
Asenele Velebayi whipped in a cross in the 85th minute that almost ended up in the Botswana net after goalmouth scramble.
Ultimately, both sides struggled to tear each other down as South Africa kept their outstanding record against the Zebras intact. In 20 matches, Bafana has come out top 15 times compared to two for Botswana, with three games having been drawn.
Helman Mkhalele’s charges moved into second spot in Group A standings ahead of their final group match against eSwatini.
