A pastor has been sentenced to prison by the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court for raping a young girl many years ago.
The victim, now 31 years old, previously spoke to IOL and called for the perpetrator to be imprisoned for raping her when she was barely a teenager.

At the time of the incident, Jooste lived close to the victim and was acquainted with her parents. The young woman explained that her parents allowed her to stay over at Jooste’s house because she was friends with his daughter.
Recently, the magistrate sentenced Jooste who is now a pastor to five years in prison, and seeing court officials lead him away was a shock to him. The woman expressed her satisfaction that the court listened to her plea for imprisonment.
She felt relieved and no longer ashamed because of what he had done to her. The court considered both her and the perpetrator when determining the sentence.
She extended her gratitude to the court, the magistrate, and the prosecutor for persisting with the case despite attempts by the pastor to derail it over the years.
Janine Passenz from the Survivors Haven Foundation provided support to the victim and her family throughout the court proceedings.
Recalling the events, the victim shared that Jooste would come home during his lunch break and expose her to pornographic content every day after school.
She explained that Jooste engaged in inappropriate acts and pressured her to participate, she refused but was later forced to do it.
It was during high school when a friend confided in her about her own experience that the victim found the courage to speak out about her ordeal. Together, they decided to inform their teacher, who then notified the principal and initiated a case at the police station.

The victim was around 14 or 15 years old at that time. The traumatic experience caused her to lose faith in men and she now identifies proudly as a lesbian.
It took several years to overcome intimacy issues and let go of the insecurities inflicted upon her. She expressed feeling unsupported by anyone except her family and shared the need for her family to change their place of worship since Jooste was a pastor in their church.
