The department of Basic Education announced the delay of reopening of school on 15th of January 2021 due to the resurgence of the Covid-19.
The gazette for reopening of schools publication suggests public schools to reopen by 15th of February 2021. In the gazette is states that the private schools are allowed to reopen on the 1st of February 2021.
“Independent schools must delay the date for the reopening of schools for learners to return to school. A period of two weeks from the date of the pronouncement of the minister, on 15 January 2021.” Angie Motshekga said.

The principal, school management team, assistance and general assistance also non teaching staff will return on this date.
- 1st February 2021
All educators to return.
- 15th February 2021
All pupils to return.
As usual, all schools to adhere to health protocols given by the department of health with regards to Covid-19.
Deputy minister Regina Mhaule explained that the decision to delay the reopening of schools was taken by the Council of Education Minister (CEM). Stakeholders also took the decision based on stats of the current health system amid Covid-19.
“Given the pressure experienced by the health system in the past few weeks. Occasioned by an increase in Covid-19 infections which has led to the second wave. The Council of Education Ministers in conjunction with the National Coronavirus Command Council [NCCC] and Cabinet has taken the decision to delay the reopening of both public and private schools with two weeks,” Mhaule said.
