The ANCWL national task team (NTT) has chosen Cyril Ramaphosa over Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to lead the ANC for a second term.
This comes after the organization’s meeting on Monday to nominate candidates for the ANC elective conference in December.
Ramaphosa received 52 votes, Dlamini-Zuma received 7, Zweli Mkhize received 5, Dlamini-Zuma received seven votes, and one member abstained. The ANCWL has dramatically changed its position after endorsing Dlamini-Zuma on the women’s card at the 2017 national conference.
But this time, the ANCWL decided that Thandi Modise would make the best deputy president, and that their representative would be best served in that role.
Since league structures are considered to be “provinces,” this is Modise’s first nomination for a “provincial” position. She will therefore be a candidate at the conference.
Paul Mashatile, who has so far emerged as the front-runner for the job in many provinces, received only 13 votes, while Modise received 43. Ronald Lamola received three votes, while Mmamoloko Kubayi received four.
Fikile Mbalula, the minister of transport, was elected secretary-general, making him the winner of both the ANCWL and the ANCYL.
Phumulo Masualle, who received 10 votes, came in far behind Mbalula, who received 39 votes, and Mdumiseni Ntuli, the former provincial secretary of KwaZulu-Natal, who received 8.
With 46 votes to Nomvula Mokonyane’s 18, the ANC general manager at Luthuli House, Febe Potgieter, was given the go-ahead to replace Mbalula.
Gwen Ramokgopa, a supporter of Ramaphosa, won the position of treasurer-general by a landslide margin of 52 votes over Lindiwe Ntshalintshali of Mpumalanga, who received nine.
