Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Marcelo Allende says his side expected the time-wasting from Wydad Athletic Club, and that’s they there plan was to score in the first half.
Many North African teams are known for using time-wasting tactics, which knockout games in the latter stages of the CAF Champions League often being interrupted by many breaks instead of the relatively free flow we saw in the first leg in Casablanca.
But in the second leg, Wydad players did attempt their usual ploy – something which Sundowns had been accused of not using enough themselves in the past, but was also shown in the latter stages of the second at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday.
Allende revealed his side expected the Wydad antics, and that’s why Peter Shalulile’s opener before the half-time break was so important.
“We knew that they were going to do that. We expected them to do that,” he told Thabiso Mosia on Radio 2000.
“We knew their mentality, like falling on the pitch and not want to play and waste time, it’s one thing we were aware of it.”
“That’s why our plan was we wanted to score a goal before half-time and fortunately we score the goal at the right time, so it went well as we planned it.”
Allende also admitted that the time-wasting is a style is not really one he likes to use too much
“Well, to honest with you, I don’t think it’s a clean way of playing football,” he added.
“You can play the game in different ways, but not the way they did. But we knew that’s what they do.
“That’s why we sticked to our plan and our plan was to score a goal and achieve our objective and our objective was to win and we won.
“It was more of a group objective as well and that’s why we’re happy but it’s not the best way to play, but that’s how they do it.”
