In a commendable display of vigilance, two residents of Bisley noticed a vehicle carrying giraffe legs in Bisley Nature Reserve, KwaZulu Natal, leading to the arrest of poachers.
Peter West, the chairperson of the Friends of Bisley Nature Reserve (FOBNR), received a call from concerned residents who had spotted the vehicle near the reserve’s entrance. The residents managed to stop the vehicle and confiscate the driver’s keys, effectively detaining the suspects.

Upon arriving at the scene, West and the residents demanded that the poachers lead them to the location where they had snared the giraffe.
Inside the reserve, they discovered the rest of the carcass and the snare that had caused the giraffe’s demise. West suspects that the giraffe meat was intended to be sold as beef, as there have been previous cases of zebra and giraffe meat being disguised and sold to unsuspecting consumers.
Further investigation led the group to the poachers’ residence, where they found additional forms of meat and snares, indicating a pattern of criminal activity. The swift action of these residents highlights the ongoing issue of poaching within the reserve.
Bisley ward councillor Nkabini Sinothi Jerome expressed disappointment at the poaching incidents occurring within the reserve. As the only city in the country with a nature reserve surrounding its perimeters, it is crucial to preserve and protect the wildlife for future generations.
