It’s been 20 months since the start of the country’s lockdown and curfews were imposed. But some groups have had enough. AfriForum has written to CoGTA Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, calling for an end to the curfew.
It has given her until Friday to respond. AfriForum’s lawyer, Daniel Eloff, says the group wants to know the reasoning and effectiveness of the curfew.
“In terms of administrative law, we have a right to rational, reasonable, and informed decision-making by our government and that’s simply what we’re questioning,” he said.

Man posing as security guard arrested for beating man to death in Soweto
A Gauteng man posing as a security guard has been arrested for allegedly murdering a man.
The 50-year-old man was arrested on Monday after allegedly bludgeoning a 31-year-old man to death in Soweto.
The incident took place on the corner of Henry Nxumalo and Marshall streets, said police spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele.
It is alleged that the suspect assaulted a 31-year-old man with an unknown instrument in the early hours of Monday. The victim sustained multiple injuries, and paramedics declared him dead on the scene. Mbele said.
The motive for the murder was not yet known, added Mbele.
“The weapon used in the commission of the crime was not recovered,” Mbele said.
An investigation was under way. The suspect is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Johannesburg Central Station Commander Brigadier Tony Perumal commended the good working relationship between the police and the community that resulted in the apprehension of the alleged perpetrator.
