Nkele Molapo’s membership in ActionSA has been terminated due to her failure to disassociate herself from anti-Herman Mashaba statements and her “undying love” for dismissed party member Abel Tau.
ActionSA admits Molapo’s association with Tau and his “continued campaign to damage the party has resulted in a material conflict of interest and an irretrievable breakdown in trust between Molapo and the party,” according to a letter obtained by SurgeZirc SA.
Alistair Shaw, the chairperson of the party’s ethics and disciplinary committee, stated that ActionSA has no problem with members having connections with members of other parties.
It was, however, improper behaviour when members with access to exceptionally confidential material and who hold prominent positions in the party used this to serve the interests of a party hostile to ActionSA, allegedly helping a campaign to damage and discredit the party’s structures.
Tau, a former Tshwane human settlements mayoral committee member, was kicked out of the party in January for reportedly making sexual attempts on a fellow member’s wife during a drinking session in November.
He has recently filed a legal challenge to his party membership termination and founded his political party, United Africans Transformation.
Tau’s troubled relationship with ActionSA has spilled over to Molapo, who was booted largely due to her association with the former member.
“The threat is real in circumstances when it is obvious you are no longer loyal to ActionSA, that you will continue to use your position and membership within ActionSA to gain support against the party and in benefit of Tau,” said the letter.
The ethics chair stated that the case would not normally concern the party, but they were litigating against Tau, and in such circumstances, Molapo’s impartiality is directly called into doubt.
“To prevent any further damage to ActionSA, and in volatile circumstances ensuing in the City of Tshwane, a continued relationship with ActionSA and yourself is entirely untenable.
“This is evident from the fear you have created in the remaining members of the caucus in the City of Tshwane. A political party cannot operate in an atmosphere of distrust and dissension,” wrote the ethics chair.
Molapo allegedly filed a court order on Monday morning to stay the decision to terminate her membership and allow her to attend in the council meeting slated to elect a new speaker of council.
