Veteran striker Siphelele Mthembu is staying put at Pretoria Callies, club chairman Moses Madala confirmed.
Mthembu joined Callies after the 2022/23 season had started following his release from AmaZulu, scoring four goals in 12 appearances for the Pretoria-based club.
Those goals helped the Callies finish 10th on the table and it is why the club decided he should remain in this coming season.
“Yes, very much and [he looks] so healthy and active, promising to have a good season from the look of things,” said Madala in short about Mthembu.
The KwaZulu-Natal striker has been around, and famously signed for both Soweto Giants, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs after leaving Maritzburg City in 2008. But Pirates won the matter, with Shaka Zulu joining the Bucs.
He also had stints with Bloemfontein Celtic, Golden Arrows and the now defunct Platinum Stars, where he won the MTN8 and TKO under Allan Freese in the 2013/14 season – beating Pirates in both finals.
He finally joined Chiefs ahead of the 2014/15 season and was with the side that won the double – the Wafa Wafa trophy and the league title under Stuart Baxter, in his first term.
He was let go to join Free State Stars in 2017/18 and helped Ea Lia Koto in his first season to win the Nedbank Cup when they beat Maritzburg United in the final in Cape Town.
He was on the move again after his sole season after the Bethlehem club was relegated, and coach Benni McCarthy came calling for his signature to join Cape Town City.
Success again followed Shaka as he won the MTN8 in the 2018/19 season, scoring one of the penalties as McCarthy won his first major trophy by beating SuperSport United 4-1 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
He left City in 2020 to join AmaZulu and again he was reunited with coach McCarthy, who was appointed in December 2020 and played a vital role as KwaZulu-Natal club enjoyed dizzy heights, finishing second in the DStv Premiership behind Mamelodi Sundowns in that season to qualify for the CAF Champions League group stages.
While Mthembu was not blessed to be scoring a lot of goals, his back to goal was vitally important in bringing the team to play, which McCarthy was also known for in his later years abroad and at Pirates when he was no longer blessed with speed and pace.
