Malegapuru Makgoba, the health ombudsman, has recommended that Rahima Moosa Hospital CEO Dr Nozuko Mkabayi be removed from her position and a disciplinary action be initiated against her.
Mkabayi has been accused of being absent from the ailing facility for the majority of her tenure.

After receiving allegations of pregnant women sleeping on the floor, the ombudsman initiated an investigation into the facility more than a year ago.
The ombudsman ruled that the facility was unsafe.
Last year, Patriotic Alliance MMC of Health and Social Development Ashley Sauls uploaded a viral video showing pregnant women sleeping on the hospital floor.
Following a visit by then-Gauteng health MEC Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi, the department stated that the hospital treated a large number of pregnant women, but that even after repurposing 16 beds to raise the total number of prenatal beds to 56, it was insufficient.
When the hospital was at full capacity, some mothers were accommodated on chairs for no more than two days, according to the institution’s policy of not turning anyone away.
Mkabayi stated that the centre dealt with complex patients that required referral from clinics, but that this did not always occur.
“We’ve got a huge number of patients, in particular that come outside the borders, and they have not gone to the clinic so there is nothing planned. They rock up at the hospital some come straight from Park Station”.
