Noxolo Kiviet, South Africa’s new Public Service and Administration Minister, is being investigated just days after taking her oath of office in the nation’s executive.
Kiviet, who formerly served as a deputy in the same portfolio, is allegedly being investigated by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) for probable qualification fraud, according to News24.

The SIU declared last year that it would investigate all charges of maladministration at the University of Fort Hare after allegations surfaced about the institution’s issuance of Honours degrees.
Kiviet obtained an Honours degree in administration as well as a Master’s degree in public administration at the University of Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape, according to the publication.
She is accused of obtaining these “academic achievements” while not having a Bachelor’s degree.
Kiviet, a former Eastern Eastern Cape Premier from 2009 to 2014 and former speaker of the Eastern Cape Provincial Assembly, was also only in possession of a matric certificate and a non-credit bearing short course certificate with ‘handwritten results’.
All of this, according to the publication, is outlined in an affidavit given as part of the SIU’s inquiry against the minister.

According to The South African, the SIU declared a few months ago that it will investigate charges of maladministration in the awarding of Honours degrees, mismanagement of funds, and recruitment of public servants for study for personal gain at the University of Fort Hare.
The specialised investigative team is also looking into four tenders, including contracts for cleaning and gardening services, leasing of student housing, and the appointment of the service provider in charge of maintaining and repairing air conditioning systems.
Kiviet was sworn in by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo on Tuesday, March 7, as one of the newest members of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s freshly formed Cabinet.
