Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane was full of praise for new striker Christian Saile Basomboli and Ashley du Preez after their 2-0 win over Maritzburg United at Harry Gwala Stadium in the Nedbank Cup last 32 on Friday.
Saile, who is a left footer, was was giving the Maritzburg defence all kinds of problems, running across the channels, while Du Preez also never stopped running.
Saile was rewarded as he poked the opener in the extra-time after King Ndlovu fumbled the ball, to score his first goal for Amakhosi.
He was joined in the party by Du Preez, who side footed Chiefs’ second on the night to secure them a last 16 spot for the first time since the 2019/20 season.
“I think for any striker it is always good when you score goals,” said Zwane.
“The good thing – both of our strikers – they scored (including du Preez). I’m happy for Ash, I wanted to see Ash scoring, and that will boost his confidence.
“I think he also played very well – he was chasing, on and off the ball he did tremendously well.
“Christian is a soldier of note, we expect more from him. He’s got this never-say-die attitude and that is what we want.
“He never stopped running, he never stopped working hard on and off the ball as well, and that is why he ended up scoring. I always remind him you create your own luck. If you keep on working hard, you will always be rewarded.
“And they were rewarded today as they both scored goals and we are happy.”
This was the second goal involvement by Saile with Chiefs after he created the second goal when Chiefs defeated Royal AM 2-0 late last month, arriving off the bench to replace Caleb-Bonfils Bimenyimana.
Over the last two seasons, Chiefs were dumped out of this competition by Richards Bay FC and TS Galaxy, but they have kept their last trophy hopes alive.
