On Monday, several correctional officers were charged with the murder of an inmate in the Worcester Magistrate’s Court in the Western Cape.
During a commotion in the prison, the inmate is said to have been beaten by staff and bitten by a dog.
The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) expressed gratitude to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for finally approving the prosecution of the officers involved in the 2015 incident at Brandvlei Maximum Security Correctional Centre in the Western Cape.
JICS conducted an investigation and discovered that the dogs were improperly deployed and that correctional officers used excessive force.
On January 31, the DPP approved the prosecution of the officers involved.
“Our efforts have not been in vain. We are confident that this will bring much-needed relief to the affected parties and will serve as a precedent for similar cases in the future,” said Cupido.
“We are hopeful that the family of the deceased will receive the justice they deserve.”
According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila, Quinton de Wee, Ebrahim May, Alton Setera, and Sakhele Dondolo were charged with one count of murder and four counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The case was postponed for a Regional Court hearing on March 1st.
JICS refused to reveal the identity of the deceased prisoner.
