The Botse Botse Secondary School in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria, is in need of at least 400 chairs for learners to function properly.
DA SAYS THE LACK OF CHAIRS FOR LEARNERS IS BAD PLANNING
Democratic Alliance (DA) did an oversight inspection at several schools on Tuesday, 7 February 2023, after receiving numerous calls about overcrowding in these schools.
Khume Ramulifho, MPL – DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Education, said this school not only faces seating problems for learners but it also lacks functioning ablution facilities.
The DA also conducted oversight inspections at MJ Mgidi Secondary School and Botse Botse Secondary School. The Botse Botse Secondary School in Soshanguve is in need of over 400 chairs for learners to function properly.
“We were shocked to discover that both schools are overcrowded and lack much-needed resources for learning and teaching. Furthermore, safety is also a massive challenge in the area. There is a need for tighter security measures to protect and safeguard the school infrastructure from being vandalised and stolen.”
Khume Ramulifho
In the Thorntree Primary School, the Gauteng Education Department has packed 77 learners in one small mobile classroom.
Ramulifho says the situation at this school clearly indicates that the GDE is failing to properly plan and allocate resources according to the specific needs of learners.
SOSHANGUVE SCHOOLS LACK PROPER TOILETS FOR LEARNERS
“This learning environment is not acceptable as it deprives learners of access to quality basic education. The mobile classrooms are old and dilapidated. Many of the ablution facilities are not functioning, forcing learners to use an open field next to the school to relieve themselves.”
Khume Ramulifho
The DA demands the GDE provide additional mobile classrooms for these schools to accommodate all learners. It said it is a matter of urgency to solve the challenge of overcrowding.
Ramulifho said the DA will write to the GED MEC to seek a permanent solution to the unhygienic and non-functioning ablution facilities at Thorntree Primary School and Botse Botse Secondary School.
“The DA will continue to fight to ensure conducive learning and teaching environment at all our schools,” Ramulifho said.
