Manchester United star Anthony Martial has opened up on his relationship with Benni McCarthy, saying he gives him “a lot of good advice”.
Martial, 27, has scored five goals in 13 appearances for United this season, which may not sound much but is more than double than his two from 2021/22.
His improvement in form, much like the rest of the striking department including Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, has been credit to new head coach Erik Ten Hag but also the South African man behind the scenes – Benni McCarthy.
There hasn’t been one negative word about McCarthy since he joined Ten Hag’s backroom stuff in the beginning of the season, with several players coming out to praise the work of the Bafana Bafana legend.
On Wednesday, Ten Hag himself also showered McCarthy with laurels, while Martial also spoke highly of the club’s first-team coach.
“Yes, he’s a coach I speak with a lot,” he told the club’s media department.
“Both on and off the training ground.
On every occasion, he gives me a lot of good advice and that can only be a good thing for all the players involved.”
McCarthy is to date the only South African to have won the UEFA Champions League, clinching it in 2003 with Porto.
During their run to the final, McCarthy scored a brace against United – the club he supported since growing up – before joining the club’s technical team 18 years later.
