MULTIMILLION DRUG BUST IN MPUMALANGA
The Kaapmuiden police and Komatipoort K9 unit manned the stop and search operation on Tuesday, 17 January.
The K9 Unit dogs detected the drugs, which were hidden in different compartments of a vehicle with a Gauteng registration. Fifty-eight plastic bags containing 53 kilograms of tik were recovered.
The two suspects, Reginald Francisco De Maura Tomàs, 32, and Reginaldo Joào Tomàs, 30, were arrested at approximately 10:00 on Tuesday.
The drugs are worth an estimated R53 million, said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala.
“Preliminary investigations indicated that the vehicle was not reported stolen. Both suspects made a brief appearance at Barberton Magistrate’s Court yesterday and remanded in custody for the second court appearance in Low’s Creek Magistrate’s Court today, Thursday 19 January 2023,” said the police spokesperson.
The Mpumalanga police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, said her province would not be used as a “smooth passage” for drug traffickers.
